My Circus Friend
Product Description:
“My Circus Friend” is an original, unique and rare one-of-a-kind oil painting on canvas signed on the reverse by the internationally acclaimed artist, actor and humanitarian, Red Skelton. The painting measures 12” x 8” and is framed in the original frame selected by the artist. The painting is framed to an approximate size of 17 7/8” x 14 7/8”. The back of the painting has written “By Red Skelton”. It was created in 1961. Given to the Turners 1969.
Mr. Skelton likely painted this work of art in 1961 using many layers of oil paint giving the actual artwork much depth and perspective. We believe Mr. Skelton kept the work of art in his personal collection until 1969 when he gifted the painting to “The Turners”. The Turners then gave the art to the current owners’ grandfather, who in turn, gave it to the current owner.
It is interesting to note that the Turners likely worked for MGM Studios which also employed Red Skelton for several decades. It is likely that they became friends with Mr. Skelton and he thanked them with this rare oil painting. Mr. Skelton frequently gave friends one of his paintings typically symbolizing a lengthy friendship.
The subject matter of this very special painting is believed to be one of the clowns who mentored Red, who travelled with Red and his mother in the Hagenbach and Wallace Circus, operating in the Midwest. Since Red’s dad passed away before Red was born, many clowns helped Red’s mother raise him.
