“My Dearest Friend” is a portrait of a female clown that Red first met in a circus setting in the 1930’s and 1940’s. A few clowns became personal friends with Red and many of them accepted Red’s advice relative to clown hair and formal make-up. This beautiful clown was painted with reddish-orange hair (the color of Red’s hair) and was dressed in a green hat and a green bowtie, also favorites of Red. When Mr. Skelton was drawing this special and unique clown, he led Mrs. Skelton to believe that “My Dearest Friend” might have been a girlfriend.
